January 3, 2009. Already 2009, and only 20 days before we leave for Chile... Nothing is ready or at least this is how it always feels... Count-down has started which does a lot of good! !
Decembre 15, 2008. Excellent news ! Kokatat, the American brand for kayaking suits and accessories has joined the adventure and become official provider. In the field of kayaking clothes, Kokata is certainly the best. Their clothes will keep us completely dry in any situation. As an example of well thought out detail: Strategically placed zips so you can leave your kayak without having to take your suit off. When the weather is as its worse we shall definitely appreciate it !
Il y a quelques jours, Mélusine a fait l’aller et retour à Vannes, avec passage au Havre, afin de préparer les kayaks pour l’envoi au Chili : emballage dans du papier bulle et du carton (le Chili n’aime pas le bois pour les envois). Le genre de travaux moins agréable mais qui font aussi partie de la préparation d’une expédition. Nos kayaks attendent maintenant sagement leur bateau dans un caisson au Havre…
Decembre 08, 2008. At last! Our PLASMOR kayaks are ready. Testing them for two days in the Morbihan Gulf in Brittany has enabled us to have a few minor points adjusted. Mélusine's kayak is called « Lola » and mine « kala» which means « day» in Alakaluf. We now need to pack them carefully and have them ready to be shipped to Chili. This truly worries me as Chilean customs can be difficult. Time is running short if we want to start the expedition on the day we had planned but preparing an adventure such as this one is a question of faith and believing that all will go well in the end while still fighting for it. Thus will it happen..
Decembre 01, 2008. Quickly done to be able to start speaking about the expedition we are preparing, this website has been online for only a few hours now… Probably lots of typos and points to revise. It will evolve in the weeks to come and right until the next expedition starts at the end of January. Please share your remarks, ideas and suggestions with me …. Thanks.
Novembre 25, 2008. Today I hear about the disappearance of Jorge Gonzales aged 78, fisherman in Punta Arenas who has taken me several times to the Cordillera Darwin on board his lancha, the Cabotamar. For 45 years he had been travelling on the Patagon seas and canals. He had developed deep love for these territories and very poetically saw thousands of extraordinary animals in rocks, trees or glaciers. He is the first to have spoken to me about a city lost in the mountains of the Cordillera Darwin. I had promised to come back one day to talk with him about the Tierra del Fuego and the legends he spoke about with so much passion. He has gone before we could meet again. By these simple words I have wished to pay homage to him.
Novembre 20, 2008. Now that Directmedica and Plasmor are partnering Hielo Continental, preparation is speeding up. The illness that forced me to remain bedridden all summer writhing with pain seems almost forgotten. Only when I train does my back remind me of that period. I have decided around mid-October that through thick and thin I would get on with this expedition. Although this decision goes against all logic (five months practically immobile, no physical training during that period and risks of relapse), I feel revived.
Common sense says I should wait a year, however it is in the fulfilment of goals such as this expedition that one gives meaning to things. I needed to set myself to this major expedition to force my body and drive my mind forward to aim for the best. Many grateful thanks to these two companies who have put their trust in me. I shall not deceive them !
